DVC MOVIE NIGHT
(A Camper’s Nightmare)

The Movie Tavern in Collegeville was alive last month with the film, “Revenant”, that starts with a brutal attack by a bear – and gets even better (New York Daily News). Cinemablend reviewed it this way: “Punishing, visceral, masculine, grisly and utterly captivating…”.

Hugh Glass (Leonardo Di Caprio) is injured from a brutal bear attack after which his fellow hunters leave him for dead. Fortunately he survives and uses his skills to find his way back home. It is a powerful movie featuring an outstanding performance by Di Caprio to be endured by the mind and spirit.

Those enduring and enjoying were:

The Ripperts, the Suffredinis, Jerry Keller, Louise Story, the Sanders, the Ilnickis, Brian Gumpert and Maryann, the Lakes, Dave Johnston and Gudie Fischer.

But the movie isn’t for everyone, especially if you’re an avid camper…just ask Wolfgang.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM HISTORIC PLUMBSTEADVILLE INN

There’s nothing much better to lift the spirits in December than a fine meal, with great friends, in a beautifully decorated 300 year-old Bucks County Inn.

The famous Plumbsteadville Inn was alive with holiday cheer and buzzing with people ready to party, especially those classic car nuts in the second floor private room. Poinsettia plants adorned each of the many tables and more gifts than ever sat waiting, on the front table, to be exchanged for the winning ticket stubs.  Gathering together this fine evening were Dick & Sandy Suffredini, Tom & Jaimee Rippert, Mike Karen Kearns, Lew Phillips, Jerry & Lee Keller, Bill & Evelyn Webb, Earl Wanklin, Graham & Susan Gill, John & Pat Hunt, Ray & Faith DeCesare, Jeff & Robin Rose, Ernie & Barbara Feldgus, Bob & Terri Tiley, Dave & Karen Paul, Louise Story, Mark & Janet Singer, Paul & Fran Holl, Paul & Evonna Phillips, Curtis & Sally Yocum, Pat & Patty Cawthorne, Adam & Eva Ilnicki, Ben& Cyndi Nolan, Bill & Linda Boorse, Dave Johnson, Greg & Janice Lake, and Brian Gumpert.

Many men’s ties were in the running for best holiday neckwear but the hands-down winner in that category went to Tom Rippert. It featured a beer-pouch, which was carefully monitored by the bartender to be certain that the esteemed president wouldn’t suffer from a dry throat. Frequent reminders for refills, followed by brief fits of coughing, enabled our M.C. to complete his appointed duties in fine fashion for the final time. YES! The final time, and Jaimee too!

As if that announcement wasn’t distressing enough, Dick and Sandy Suffredini followed with a retirement statement of their own. The heart and soul of DVC and the energetic, personable quartet responsible for all the great organization and planning that has made our club the template for others to emulate.

That’s enough for the bad news. Tom, Jaimee, Dick and Sandy will be available to assist all who volunteer. Rising to the occasion already are Adam and Eva (one of DVC’s most active couples) who volunteered for membership duties – an important function.

(A beautiful day in Deutsch country)

No, that’s not a misprint. Early British settlors in Pennsylvania, when asking immigrants what language they spoke, mistook the German word “Deutsch” for “Dutch”. Consequently, for hundred of years the Pennsylvania Germans in Lancaster (named for a town in England) have been erroneously referred to as “Pennsylvania Dutch”. The Amish are of German descent and their fabulous farms roll for miles across gorgeous, British inspired, Lancaster County.

DVC’s caravan of a dozen or so British TDs and Bs, one German roadster and a Honda van wound its way through the lush, post-harvest countryside passing black carriages and wagons pulled by proud steeds, heads held high and striding with perfect rhythm. Young Amish girls waved and smiled at our horseless buggies as if they were looking at an MG for the first (love at first sight, of course) time.

Our planners/sponsors, Dave Johnston and Chuck Denlinger, couldn’t have mapped a better route – along the Schuylkill River, through French Creek State Park to the Morgantown Windmill Restaurant for breakfast. Then off to Parkesburg and Gap where, we made a quick Wawa stop before, rumbling off to the Ephrata Cloister.

German mystic Conrad Beissel was lured to Pennsylvania in 1720 by the writings of William Penn and Beissel’s quest for religious freedom. Today, an historical site, The Cloister presents an intriguing look at a unique, early Pennsylvania settlement as alluring as the Amish homesteads.

Lunch at the Plain and Fancy restaurant in Bird in Hand, Pa. was more than welcomed, as the skies darkened and temperatures dropped. Much more had been planned for the remainder of the day, including a buggy ride through Amish country and a beer and wine tasting stop, but while many chose to head home, our fearless leaders, Dave and granddaughter Alyssa forged onward.

Their buggy driver, Amish girl Ester, gave them a front seat ride through Bird in Hand with first-hand explanations of Amish life. Everyone will want to hang around for this special experience next year.
