(In the beginning there was another Tom)

We all realize how much our own Tom and Jamie Rippert have contributed to DVC over the years, but I must confess that I didn’t know there once was another Tom who was the inspiration for DVC’s formation. Somehow, this doesn’t surprise me. Tom Hornsby (according to club historical accounts) was every bit the likeable guy who serves as our club president.

It was our Tom’s brother, Hank, who first met the original Tom at a gathering in Danbury, Connecticut in 1967 (when our Tom was probably still too young to drive) after Hornsby spied Hank’s PA license plate in the crowd. Tom Hornsby lived in Philadelphia and was an avid collector of antiques who loved to drink martinis – a friendship just waiting to blossom. Hank and Tom discussed the idea of forming a local club and, as they say, the rest is history. Tom Hornsby died in 1974 but his pal Hank didn’t forgot about his pal.

The annual DVC Hornsby Memorial Rallye was Hank’s way of honoring his friend and this year’s event in Tom’s honor was held on Saturday, October 3 with 8 cars participating. The rallye roared off from the same location as last year, the Turkey Hill in the Bucks County village of Harrow. The sunny skies of previous years were absent, and most participants decided to go ‘hoody’. The first car was off at 1:09 in the afternoon and the last car at 1:16. The route wound through a variety of scenic roads in the woods of upper Bucks County (most of which since the Hornsby days have been paved) and ended at the Cawthorne’s for a late lunch and beverages. A couple of cars (identities withheld) ultimately DNF’d, but most managed to complete the course within a reasonable time. Everyone made it to the picnic, after a few wrong but scenic turns, and there were no mechanical failures during the event! Everyone had a great time as, no doubt, would have had Tom Hornsby in his TF.

The participants were Tom and Jaimee Rippert, Dick and Sandy Suffredini, Chuck Denlinger and Donna Bristol, Jen and Steve Albright, Jill and Wade Albright, Adam and Eva Ilnicki, Garth and Susan Gill, Paul and Evonna Phillips and Ben and Cindy Nolan.

Congratulations to Tom and Jaimee Rippert who again took home 1^st place and the Hornsby Trophy which is awarded to the 1^st T series car. Honors also go to 2^nd place to Jill and Wade Albright and 3^rd place to Paul and Evona Phillips.

Thanks to all for their participation. We give a special thanks to Tom and Jaimee for obtaining the engraved pewter plaque awards and to the Cawthornes for their sponsorship and hospitality.

Tom had good reason for dancing in his driveway Saturday night, August 1, 2015. There was a huge party going on at Tom and Jaimee Rippert’s spacious country home following the 11th annual Car Show at Pennypacker Mills. A casual observer might have even said that the car show had just moved a few miles away!

Twenty-seven of the cars and fifty-seven attendees present in Schwenksville caravanned to the Ripperts, parking their chariots in the driveway and on the lawns, setting the stage for a mini car show and one big party.

There were surprises all around, from meeting new members, Joe and Lois Mack, and greeting (Dave and Karen, Paul, Rich and Brenda Moers) members we haven’t seen for a while, to an appearance by the late, David Schwab’s beloved “Crusty” the TD, now owned by Graham and Susie Gill.

DVC welcomed Bruce Vild and Faith Lamprey, from British Marque in Rhode Island, who became instantly popular by their gifts of a case of delicious Naragansett beer and scrumptious tomato pie.

Hank Rippert (a chip off the old block) informed everyone about an all MG meet to take place in Louisville, KY next June. Don’t miss that event, as there’s bound to be another post-car show caravan back to Perkiomenville for another fantastic party! Following Hank’s talk he was presented with an o’ward from Tom and Dick. He now has a colorful, collapsible cane complete with a red flashing light. Now he’ll never lose another cane at an MG event.

“By golly, Ella, here come the British again, for the eleventh time!” Yelled, Samuel Pennypacker, from a window of his Schwenksville mansion in Pennypacker Mill’s Park on August 1, 2015.

“Not to worry, Governor, those British car buffs will leave everything as squeaky clean as Buckingham Palace before they motor off to the Ripperts for some of that other Sam’s ale.” Park manager, Ella, hurried off at 7:30 am to open the gates for the pit crew.

By 9:30 am, Samuel’s 1890s estate began welcoming the first entries of what would become a showing of 77 cars. Participants competed for numerous awards throughout the day, enjoying near perfect summer weather, a guided tour of the Pennypacker Estate and music from a by-gone era.

This year the Daimler and Lanchester  Owner’s Club of North America included our show as part of their weekend gathering. They had members from Canada down to Virginia showing off their beautiful examples of the marque. A big thank you to them for attending and hope they come back.

The first award given out was the British Marque Car Club News Favourite Award presented by Faith Lamprey and Bruce Vild. It is in recognition of people who seem to get the most enjoyment using their cars. DVC members, Graham and Susan Gill, with their 1950 MG TD received the award. Other members recognized the car, “Crusty”, as it used to belong to Dave Schwab.

The Tour began with exceptionally beautiful weather at 9:30 AM just west of Boyertown. Eleven cars all headed west on route 73 and consisted of Adam and Eva Ilnicki, Dave Johnston, Tom and Jaimee Rippert, Jeff Rose, Mark and Janet Singer, Louise Story, Dick and Sandy Suffredini, Bill and Evelyn Webb, Lee Wesner, Pete and Nancy Yaskowski and Curt Yocum. Turning onto the back roads, our group twisted and turned though some of the finest scenery that eastern Pennsylvania can offer passing close to the Bear Mountain ski area and along the Amish farm fields near Kutztown on the way to Hawk Mountain.

All seemed to be almost too perfect until the Ilnicki’s beautiful and recently purchased closet queen TD decided that she needed a bit of coaxing to be back out in the main stream of things. Luckily, Adam was able to schmooze and re-assure her (see attached picture) on several stops during the tour and, along with the help of a new fuel pump and some fuel line from Dave J. and Dick, she made it the entire way without becoming a trailer queen.

After a short visit to Hawk Mountain’s visitors center and a nice hike to a few rocky outcroppings on the mountain edge we sighted a few Turkey Buzzards and some fine vistas. Actually, most hawks migrate in late September and October. All departed Hawk Mountain at about 1PM and the convoy of MGs meandered along the peacefully beautiful Maiden and Saucony Creeks on the way back to Kutztown University where we gathered for some pictures along with Mike Keeney, an MG enthusiast who met up with us for the pictures and joined us for a late lunch at the Kutztown Tavern. A fine lunch was enjoyed by all.

After lunch, the clan headed back through some more hills and farm country to the Singer’s house, just west of Boyertown, for some late day fellowship, desert and refreshments. A very fine day scooted by fast and came to an end at about 7 PM with all departing for home.
