Planning Meeting – 2012

The DVC Annual Planning Meeting was held Sunday, November 18th at the Silverdale Borough Park Building. After a dreadful month, the weather was mostly sunny which encouraged a few to drive their vintage automobiles of the club’s marque. Bill Boorse drove the oldest MG to the meetings as he arrived in his MGA. Driving MGBs were Pat and Carmita Alzamora, Dave Schwab, and Bill Webb. Buzz, represented his Mini marque and guided Tom and Jaimee Rippert to the meeting. Also in attendance were Donna Bristol, Pat and Patty Cawthorne, Chuck Denlinger, David Johnston, Walt King, Adam and Eva Ilnicki, Dave and Karen Paul, Jim and Diane Sanders (hosts), Dick and Sandy Suffredini, and Lee Wesner. Good food and beverages were enjoyed by all.
Tom Rippert opened the meeting. It was announced that Club Regalia can now be ordered on the DVC Web Site. This site offers a wide range of apparel which can be ordered with the club’s insignia/logo. Also, the new car club badges have been ordered and will soon be available. A sample is to be displayed at the upcoming Christmas Party. The plan for advertising by our sponsors on the DVC Website was discussed and presented as a service to the membership rather than an effort to raise funds. The goal is to place venders of needed supplies and services in an easily accessible manner on the club’s website. By simply clicking on the vender, one will be redirected the vender’s website (or contact information if a website is not available). The inclusion of a year’s subscription to the British Marque with annual membership was revisited and a proposal to proceed with a one year trial is being considered. Patty Cawthorne shared good news from the club’s treasury and reported that the club’s finances are healthy with a budgetary surplus. The remainder of the meeting was dedicated to determining the 2013 calendar of events.
Also discussed as events of interest to members of the club were a track day at the New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville (date TBD), the Carlisle Import Show and Swap Meet (May 11-12), and the VSCCA Fall Finale at Lime Rock (October 11-12).

Mystery Tour – 2012

Our Mystery Tour began with the usual questions.. When will it start? Who will come? How many cars will be white instead of Red? What color is the White house? This membership drive did not have time for the questions because many just wanted to look at the scenery in the wilds of Berks County.
The day was perfect, the leaves were changing and permitted views not seen during the summer, and everyone had a great time at the round table and the table high lift for our food and beer tasting in the grand dining room. Included were Tom & Jaimee Rippert (MGA), Paul & Evanna Phillips (MG midget), Jim & Diane Sanders (MGB), Adam & Eva Ilnicki (MGB), Jim & Janet Taylor (Mini), Dick & Sandy Suffredini (MGTD), Pat & Carmita Alzamora (MGB), Chuck Denlinger (MGTD) Jeff Rose (MGA twinkie), Louise Story (MGTD) Walt King & Donna Bristol (Maroon Jeep). A special presentation was given to Walt and Donna for completing their first rally, and Diane Sanders was presented with a prize for having another birthday. As always the food brought by the members was delicious and plentiful. Thanks to all who made it a great day.

Lime Rock – 2012

On October 12th and 13th Lime Rock Park was the venue of the 2012 Vintage Sports Car Club of America Fall Finale, One hundred vintage sports cars participated in 2 days of racing at the 2 mile track nestled in the rolling country side of northwestern Connecticut. Among the cars was No.271, Di’s TD, driven by DVC’s own Jim Sanders and crewed in the pit by Tom Rippert and Dick Suffredini. The two days of racing included a warm up race, a practice race and a sprint for each class on each day. Jim also participated in a race for all cars pre- 1955 on Friday, and a race for all cars beginning with “M” on Saturday. This was 8 races in 2 days. Di’s TD preformed quite well and ran more like a youngster rather than a 60 years old car. Of course she was spoiled by the pampering received from the 2 crack wrenches (racing talk), Tom and Dick, and the 112 octane leaded racing fuel she imbibed.

Team DVC in Poland – 2012

Many of our DVC members already know that in the beginning of September Eva and I traveled to Poland to take part in the 1st Historic Edition of Rally of Poland. Probably not as many people in the DVC know that Rally of Poland is the second oldest automobile rally in the world, after the famous Monte Carlo Rally. It is also the most prestigious and biggest event in automobile sports in Poland and Central Europe. The first edition of the rally took place in 1921. In 1960 Rally Poland for the first time became a round of the FIA European Rally Championship (the rally was then the most important championship round in the world). In September 2012 the Cracow Automobile Club organized the first ever edition of the Historic Poland Rally (RPH), the rally is referred to the tradition of Poland Rally and its formula to Rally Monte Carlo Historique.
We arrived in Poland a couple days before the Rally and had very little time to adjust to not only the new time zone but also the different laws of the road. I had not driven a car in Europe since the 1980’s. My first couple of hours on the road was under the great supervision of my brother-in-law, I was in hell. After one full day of “driving school” in the city of Wroclaw (our hometown), we went to Cracow for the Rally. We met up with our friend Erwin (which many of you met at our Memorial Day Party). He was kind enough to let us use his 1970 Fiat 124 Spider for the Rally.
The first day of the Rally was basically a photo opp. It was an honor start from the old town square of Cracow. The second day of the Rally the fun began, the race had truly started. All together there were 57 cars racing including us, with our famous number 27. To make the long story short we signed up for something much harder than we originally anticipated. The Rally was extremely hard /very fast and most of the driving was on side roads off secondary country roads with two way traffic. On the first day we lost a lot of points because we learned the many rules as we were driving. The route the rally was available 30 days prior to the start of the race. Most of the competitors took advantage of this and practiced multiple times going through the route. Unfortunately Eva and I were not so lucky and had switched seats from a Boeing 777 straight to the Rally car, (the Boeing 777 doesn’t take the turns as quickly). The Rally was about 500 miles long on mountainous roads. The first day we were behind the wheel for 12 hours and second day was easier, only 10 hours. As you can see in the picture that is attached in the gallery our directions were very simple, just distance and direction which we had to turn. We were not given any street names or other information. Our only friend was a bike odometer which calculated precisely every meter we drove. When we made mistakes, Eva my navigator had to deduct the amount of km/m we over drove, and then she was in hell.
In conclusion we finished the Rally 38th out of 48 classified teams. About 9 teams did not complete the Rally. We are very proud of our placement and extremely happy that we took part in the Rally. It was a great adventure. Not to mention that we proudly displayed our DVC colors on both sides of our Fiat. Some day we will return to the Rally of Poland. After the Rally we took some time to travel around the southern part of Poland (we shared some pictures with you in the gallery).
P.S.
As many of you know I am a professional driver and long distance driving is my daily bread. But those 500 miles on Polish serpentine roads in the Rally were the hardest I’ve ever driven! When Eva and I finished the Rally we found out that instead of blood flowing through our veins we had premium high octane gasoline flowing in them.
