Chasin’ for Chalfin Polo Match – 2012

bm_POLO-01   July 15, 2012

After a heads up by Lew Phillips, a group of 15-20 DVC members and friends met at the Brandywine Polo Club in Toughkenamon,Chester County, for the second Annual Chasin’ for Chalfin benefit polo match on July 15.  Admission was waved for those arriving in classic cars and we managed to get at least six MG’s there in spite of a stormy forecast (it rained within minutes of our departure).

Early arrival allowed us to get prime parking close together. This was the second time for some members and we were alerted to head for spaces under one of the few trees. We thank them  as a good breeze in the shade made the warm day pleasant. Lunch before the 3pm start was on the guests (thanks for the sandwich Terri and Bob. I forgot) .

The polo scene is a stylish one and wide brim hats were part of the day as shown by polo player Heather with a DVC TD . (Thanks again Terri).  But, off to the matches. A one chukker demo was played prior to the main match and we were quickly into the excitement of horses thundering back and forth at top speed while we tried to learn the rules (more info on the ‘line’ needed).

Not knowing the rules did not hold back appreciating some really well played shots and horsemanship. Between later chukkers the crowd was invited to wander the playing field to ‘stomp the divots’  (as in PRETTY WOMAN) and we were rewarded with a glass of champagne on the other side. Watch out for ‘steaming’ divots.  More great play continued with a final score of 5-3 (maybe). As the players left the field they ride along the boards receiving thanks from spectators for a game well played.

A short while later a light BBQ style dinner was served along with an open wine and beer bar.  A really good blue grass band came on after, but we all soon departed as some had long rides and the weather was getting shaky.  Another nice day out.

(The benefit is for an injured rider and sponsored by friends.  Information can be found on the web under Chasin’ for Chalfin)
